The amount of time we spend worrying about the future or ruminating about the past is astonishing. It is also the main cause of our distress. In many cases, the events we are actually experiencing are not all that unpleasant. Rather, it is our thoughts, feelings, and/or physical sensations in response to or in anticipation of them that is the source of our distress.

Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based therapy that facilitates acceptance of our pleasant and unpleasant internal experiences, and commitment to living a rich and meaningful life. Mindfulness involves consciously bringing awareness to the present moment in a non-judgmental way with openness and receptiveness, thereby enabling us to reduce the impact of difficult situations, sensations, thoughts, and emotions whilst also maximising enjoyment of pleasant events and interactions.

Research shows that mindfulness can:

  • Reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression
  • Assist in the management of chronic pain
  • Improve issues concerning weight and/or eating
  • Enhance concentration and memory
  • Improve study and work performance
  • Improve relationships and overall well being

ACT Mindfulness Group Program: Dr Carly Reid will be running an 6 week ACT Mindfulness Group Program for adults at Benchmark Psychology. The group sessions will run for approximately 60 minutes in small groups of 10 to 15 people.

Program Content: Sessions will involve formal and informal activities aimed at developing acceptance of unwanted thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations; learning to relate differently to them; focusing attention and staying present; and exploring personal values and committing to values-based goals. Contrary to popular belief, there is no religious content.

Should I Participate? You do not need to have a mental health condition in order to benefit from the practice of mindfulness. However, the group program is also suited for adults currently experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or challenges with weight/eating. Participation in the group can occur in conjunction with ongoing, individual therapy; prior to or post therapy; or in the absence of therapy altogether.
